What is Pregnancy Massage?
Women and their bodies need to be supported emotionally and physically more than ever during pregnancy as the body undergoes rapid changes. Women must learn to adapt to their every changing body and situation, and the new responsibilities they are facing, which sometimes may seem over-whelming. This can all contribute to a feeling of stress and anxiety which is not desirable during these nine months. Many women find that regular massage during this period can be very beneficial in both relieving some physical side-effects and providing them with some relaxation and a few moments of precious “me” time.
What are the benefits of a Pregnancy Massage?
Some of the benefits may include:
- Promote relaxation and reduce stress
- Helps reduce fluid retention
- Diminish headaches
- Relieve aches in muscles and joints
- Provide emotional support
- Relieve muscle spasms, cramps and general aches and pains
- Increase circulation and thus help reduces the possibility of varicose veins and swelling in the feet and legs
- Help with digestion – a system that can become squashed during pregnancy
- Provides deep moisturisation to the skin helping to minimise stretch marks
What is a Pregnancy Massage treatment like?
It is often not comfortable or even possible to lie in a prone position during pregnancy, so a variety of positions are used to accommodate the client in positions that they find most comfortable and relaxing. Pillows and cushions are often used for support. The massage is slow and rhythmic, incorporating some breathing to help prepare the client for the process of giving birth. Treatments range from 30 minutes to 90 minutes. Pregnancy massage is performed on a massage couch and using an oil or medium, this is often applied warm for the comfort of the client. Clothing is removed (underwear not included, please leave that on). Towels are used to protect your modesty and only the specific area being treated will be uncovered. A thorough consultation is conducted on your first visit to gain a full understanding of any conditions and discuss the most effective personalised treatment plan.
Aftercare Advice
Massage is an aid to the body's natural mechanisms to release stress. To gain maximum benefit from your treatment, it is advisable that you follow this aftercare advice for the next 12 hours.
- Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins; massage aids the removal of toxins from the body.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol or smoking; massage aims to aid the body’s natural detoxification process and these substances are counterproductive as they increase the levels of toxins in the body.
- Avoid eating heavy meals because blood is diverted to the gut to help with digestion. Digestion will divert energy away from the healing process. Eat light meals such as fruit and vegetables.
- Be aware of your posture.
- Rest as much as possible in order to assist the healing process.
- You may feel emotional, this is quite normal.
- You may experience a feeling of tiredness or fatigue following a massage. In rare cases, headaches may follow. Increased urination is very likely after a Massage, make sure you stay well hydrated. In very rare cases flu-like symptoms (runny nose, coughing) may be experienced, but these will be temporary as the body re-balances itself. It will be replaced by a feeling of wellbeing!
